Want to help the Troop out? Have some extra items around collecting dust? We need a few things (new or used):
- Kitchen Knives - Any kitchen knife will do, not serrated please.
- Plastic Utensils - For cooking, mixing, serving food.
- Frying Pans – The larger, the better.
- Griddles – The larger, the better.
- Plastic Containers – to hold kitchen utensils.
- Dish Towels – We simply don’t care what color or whether they match.
We have 5 patrols, so we need enough of the above to stock 5 Patrol Boxes.

Some scouts in our troop are going Saturday, September 25.
Photos have been posted…at least some of them. More to come!
We had a blast. With the recent rain, the water level was up enough that we didn’t drag bottom.
The weather held out…some sun, no rain, plenty of creek water to go around.
Ah, the water gun fights!
This year we added two canoes and a dog name Boo…the canoes help transport the outstanding lunch and some scouts that might have been a little chilly.
We met a cool Kayak instructor who offered to take Troop 189 kayaking at no charge. Remember to tell your patrol leaders you want to kayak, and we can set it up for next year.
Day 7 (well, Day 6 1/2 really):
After lunch Friday, the scouts got to finish the rest of the merit badges and enjoy open swim or shooting.
It rained around 3PM, which brought most of them back to our campsite. We enjoyed some good jokes and riddles from Justin. That scout really likes to tell some good jokes. Read more…
Day 6:
Everyone slept in…6:45AM is sleeping in at Hidden Valley. We woke to Eddie the Bugler! Ah, what joyful noise that sound is!
We made it on time for the Flag Raising Ceremony, only to experience a “Staff Infection.” The Staff, which has been great all week, decided to join the troop ranks rather than stay isolated for the flag raising. Read more…
Day 5:
No rain today…just heat.
The Daniel Beard Scouts and Wilderness Survival Scouts made it back in one piece from Outpost…no horror stories to report, but they look exhausted.
We barely made it to breakfast…luckily, the rest of the camp waited to eat until we got there. Read more…
Day 4:
We woke up, fairly late for camp (7AM) to more rain. It poured all night long, just like Lionel Richie said it would.
Today is “Cook all the meals in the Campsite” Day. Not a favorite for our troop, because the scouts are so busy with their merit badges, they simply don’t have the time to cook. But this is coming down from the National Council, Read more…
Day 3:
Things couldn’t be going better for the scouts. They have settled into their merit badge routines and are learning tons. There aren’t as many pictures for Day 3 because the rain started and didn’t stop.
The Daniel Beard Scouts continue to learn important scouting skills. Their outpost overnight hike/campout was postponed because of the storms. That didn’t seem to bother them, as it just gives them another day to practice their new skills. Read more…
Sorry this post is coming in the morning instead of late last night, but even a scoutmaster has to sleep.
On Day 2, the scouts got to the flag raising and to their merit classes without any problem. Mainly because of Eddie the Bugler! That’s right, a scoutmaster’s dream…one of our scouts plays the bugle. So he was up by 6:30 AM, playing with all his heart and soul, waking the troop for breakfast! After the hoagie lunch, they got to nap…a much needed nap. I may have even found the hammock for a couple of minutes. We passed the site inspection, with a little room for improvement. Read more…
Day 1:.JPG)
We left, almost at 1PM…some of the scouts still think they can arrive right at the moment we leave. We’ll figure it out. The scouts repacked the trailer, removing all the stuff we don’t need, and filling it with all the stuff they think they need. Check out the photos…it was crammed tight. Read more…
Nathan, our ASPL, is at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure™ base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.
He was given a SPOT satellite GPS device that allows folks back home to track his progress on the trail. Read more…
